  1. Town Hall Meeting - Reducing Ethnic Disparity through GAAP

    The City of Haines City, the Department of Juvenile Justice and Haines City Police Department are planning an open dialogue between youth and law enforcement called “Bridging the G.A.A.P.” G.A.A.P. means “Gaining Appreciation by Adjusting Perspectives”. The discussion is to be held September 26 at 6 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers located at 620 E. Main Street, Haines City, FL 33844. The purpose of the meeting is to increase dialogue between law enforcement officers and youths. It is also intended to cultivate relationships so that the youth can have a better understanding of law enforcement roles and responsibilities as well as the importance of working together in the community to keep our communities safe.

  1. Heidi's Academy of the Performing Arts

    September 19, 2019, 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Oakland Auditorium

    Heidi Yancey is originally from Newark, Delaware. Heidi has four brothers and is the only girl. At the age of five years old, Heidi would watch the television show "Fame". The well-known performer, Debbie Allen, inspired her. Heidi started taking her first dance class which was ballet. Heidi was the only African American girl in her class, so she faced many difficult challenges. By the age thirteen, Heidi was taking ballet, tap, and jazz. Heidi later became Delaware's first African American Ballerina to dance as a soloist in the ballet "Cinderella." We are lucky to have such a talent to teach our youth the art of dance.

    Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karate with Sensi Jose Cordero coordinates the Karate program. In this class he teaches children positive attitudes, self-discipline, goals, and self-defense skills. Classes for children ages 5-16 are Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm & 7:00 pm-8:00 pm in the Lake Eva Community Center.

    This is a self-guided ongoing class, where participants choose their piece to be poured into a mold and then fired on site. Once it is finished, they get to paint it! This class is held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8:30 AM-11:30 AM in the Art Room at Lake Eva Community Center. You must be 18 years or older to join.
